Human Rights Intern

About the role

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) Cambodia is recruiting a Human Rights Intern in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The internship starts on 1 March 2027 with an initial period of 3 months. The intern supports OHCHR in its mission to protect human rights for all people, help people realize their rights and assist those responsible for upholding them in implementing them.

Key responsibilities

• Assist with coordination activities related to thematic and country mandates on human rights projects and activities within the assigned area.
• Draft and prepare official documents.
• Conduct thematic, legal and internet research.
• Compile data and statistics.
• Attend and summarize conferences and meetings, and provide assistance during conferences and workshops.
• Draft presentations and speeches.
• Conduct media analysis.
• Perform other related duties requested by the supervisor.

Required profile

• Enrolled in or having completed a graduate programme (second university degree or equivalent or higher), or enrolled in or having completed the final year of a first university degree (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent).
• A field of study closely related to the internship is required; professional work experience is not required.
• Fluency in spoken and written English is required; knowledge of another UN official language (Arabic, Chinese, Russian or Spanish) or Khmer is an advantage.

Required skills

• Ability to do research and draft reports is desirable.
• Legal background or skill is desirable but not required.

Interns are not paid by the United Nations; costs for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the intern's responsibility. The UN does not charge any fee at any stage of the recruitment process.
