Early Warning Systems Specialist

About the role

The Early Warning Systems Specialist will support the World Food Programme’s efforts to strengthen climate and disaster risk management across Cambodia. Working from the Programme Division in Phnom Penh, the specialist will design, implement and maintain early warning mechanisms that help protect vulnerable populations and ensure timely humanitarian response.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and maintain early warning system tools and databases in line with WFP’s Country Strategic Plan.
• Collect, analyse and interpret climate, weather and disaster data to generate actionable alerts.
• Coordinate with national authorities, UN agencies and NGOs to ensure data sharing and joint response planning.
• Produce regular situation reports and risk assessments for internal and external stakeholders.
• Provide technical training and capacity‑building to WFP staff and partners on early warning processes.
• Support the integration of early warning information into food security and nutrition programmes.

Required profile

• Advanced university degree in disaster risk management, climate science, geography, public health or a related field.
• Proven experience in designing or operating early warning systems, preferably in a humanitarian or development context.
• Strong understanding of climate‑related hazards, food security and nutrition challenges.
• Excellent analytical and report‑writing skills, with fluency in English.
• Ability to work effectively in a multicultural team and engage with government and partner agencies.
